A Note from the Author
If we all possessed a report card of life, many people would believe that high grades would be achieved based on
the amount of money individuals have made, the size of their houses, and other material wealth. In my early
adulthood, I too believed that and so I surrounded myself with fancy cars, fast boats, and nice vacations. With a
loving family, great friends, and excellent health, I thought I had it made. I was working hard and reaping the
rewards.
Then over time, everything seemed to unravel, and eventually, I lost it all. Three broken marriages, a succession of
failed businesses, and then the kicker - life changing health problems. My life was sliding downhill and I didn't
know how to get back up. So instead of facing my life challenges head on, I decided to run away – to escape.
With my small retirement pension, I headed south to Mexico. I rationalized spending the rest of my life under the
warm tropical sun with inexpensive living and NO COMMITMENTS. I pictured myself taking a siesta each
afternoon and watching the world go by as I swung from a hammock. And that is exactly what I did – but not for
long. Little did I realize what God had in store for me. Now my hammock lies empty most afternoons. I finally
found my life's purpose in Veracruz, Mexico.
The View from a Hammock is my story of successes, failures, adventures, and the search to find what matters
most in life.
The View from a Hammock by James F. Motyka
Finding Fulfillment when Life Unravels
In his autobiography, you will follow Jim Motyka's story of
growing up in the late 1940's and 50's in Chicago, his humorous
antics during his basic training days at Great Lakes Naval Center
in Illinois, and his experiences on the flight decks of Navy ships
off the coast of Vietnam. After proudly serving two tours, Jim
writes of his return to civilian life and the rocky road that
stretched before him. After failed marriages, a string of business
attempts, and heath challenges, Jim decided to escape his "old
life" by retiring to sunny Mexico. To him, it sounded like a great
way to enjoy his remaining years - hanging out in a hammock.
However, that plan was to be short lived. Discover what Jim
discovered in a small, sleepy town in southern Mexican - that
serving others is far more rewarding than a life of lazily hanging
out in a hammock.
